Describe your sound in 5 words or less?

Indie, country, roots, pastoral, rock.

If your music was an artwork what would it look like?

The Fighting Temeraire by JMW Turner.

Who’s your favourite artist/artwork?

JMW Turner. Followed closely by Rothko & Monet.

What’s your favourite gig you have played to date?

We opened for Richard Hawley at the Old Museum in Brisbane a couple of months ago. That’s a definite favourite. We also toured the country with Mark Olson from The Jayhawks a couple of years back. That was great as well.

What inspires/influences your music the most?

Anything really from Bukowski to Bob Dylan to Oscar De La Hoya…the list goes on and on.

What song do you wish you wrote?

It changes from day to day but at the moment it’s The Son of Hickory Hollers Tramp by O.C. Smith, written by Dallas Frazier.

What part of making music excites you the most?

Making a record is the most exciting part. Trying to make something that will last & getting to share the experience.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

Well normally we have eight players so it can be a noisy affair but our NGV show will be as an acoustic four-piece. We will have  three vocals/acoustic & electric guitars and keys. But the job is essentially the same. To serve the songs, tell the stories, play them the best we can.

Tell us about the last song you wrote?

The last song I wrote was written with a bunch of other songs which follow the same narrative. They tell the story of a young family/couple in Barcaldine breaking up & finding the end of love. I didn’t sit down to intentionally write it that way but as I got further into the story, each new song I had was telling the next part or chapter. The songs are called Shakespeare Hotel, Sunlight on the Sills and Hard Life Loving You. They will be at the center of our new record.

What is most exciting thing happening now in the Melbourne Music scene?

The thing I am most excited by in the Melbourne music scene is the reformation of Gersey & their new LP. Can’t wait.
