Melbourne Now countdown – day 91

As anticipation and planning for Melbourne Now intensifies, how are NGV Educators preparing for the exhibition?

Our starting point has been to learn as much about the exhibition as we can. Looking at the exhibition models with curators highlighted the incredible scope of the exhibition and the unique opportunities the exhibition offers to engage students of all ages – from kindergarten to tertiary level – with the art and design of now.

Our educators were soon brimming with creative ideas for programs and projects. These are now being planned in more detail. All programs have a strong focus on active participation and enjoyment through providing opportunities for students to explore, discover, inquire, think creatively, discuss and make.

Short introductory programs include talks designed to launch students on their own art and design adventure, and ‘zoom’ talks that explore particular themes or questions in the exhibition. Immersive programs that extend over a half or full day include: an art and dance  extravaganza for early years students to celebrate the end of the school year; writing workshops and artist inspired art-making workshops in our studio spaces at NGV Australia and NGV International.

We are so excited by this exhibition that we are not even stopping for summer holidays! In January we will present our first ever summer school for art and design teachers which will include workshops, lectures, discussions and studio visits with Melbourne Now artists, NGV curators and educators. Reflecting the strong design focus in Melbourne Now, we are also extending our popular ‘Art Start’ January program for VCE Art and Studio Arts students to Visual Communication and Design students. A series of artists’ talks and workshops for senior students will be held at the beginning of the school year.

Free online programs will include regular webinars, beginning in October, to introduce the exhibition and to help teachers plan their visits. A program of video conferences for students will connect Melbourne Now to our regional and remote audiences.

If you would like to know more about Melbourne Now and the opportunities it offers for teachers and students of all levels, book now to attend a free information night about the exhibition on Wednesday September 11, 6pm8pm, at NGV International.
